I've been told that I should describe what kinds of books I write so that casual visitors to this site will have some idea of what they've stumbled into. After rolling various introductions off a glib tongue, I realized that this attempt at categorization is what has gotten me into trouble throughout my writing career. Despite attempts to squeeze the books into various trends, they inevitably have refused to fit the trends as my writing has evolved. One reviewer called my books "stories about uprooted young Americans." I would agree, but add that they are stories about everyman. (Or perhaps it would be better to say "everywoman.") The characters' problems are the problems we all experience: searching for a place to belong; striving to understand the people who care for us and the people who don't; fear of the unknown; trying to function despite emotions that threaten to swamp the little boat of life. So in response to the question "What do you write?", all I can answer is: "Books about people." I hope you enjoy them. --
